FAQ

General Advice:

Always apply the latest patch if you are having problems with any of the Championship Manager games.

Never have a virus scanner active while the game is running, as this will almost always cause the game data to corrupt.

If the game appears to have frozen for a couple of minutes, don't restart the computer . It may still be running slowly even if Windows indicates that it is "Not Responding." If there is still no activity after 30 minutes, close the game using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Do not switch the system off if you can avoid it.

CM 2 Series:

The following section is for technical support and assistance with the Championship Manager 2 series.

You must have these minimum system specifications for the game to function correctly. We do not provide support for configurations that do not meet the minimum requirements.

Please note that the Championship Manager 2 series will not run on Windows XP or 2000

Minimum System Requirements

· 486 SX 25MHz
· 8 Meg Ram
· Vesa Compatible SVGA video card
· 2x speed CDROM
· Mouse

Recommended System Requirements

· 486 DX 66MHz

Please note: You may need to update the drivers for your system hardware for the game to function properly. Driver files are often obtainable via the web sites of their manufacturers, links are availible on the menu to the right of this FAQ.

The other common problem is that laptop systems will attempt to compress the traditional version of the standard 101-function keyboard (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller keyboard configuration. This is usually done by relying on multifunction keys that allow the user to assign different functions to the same key. Unfortunately, this has been known to cause problems with our games.

Very Important - you must run this game in MS-DOS mode and not a DOS window in Windows95, if you do not know how to get your machine to boot into a full MS-DOS mode then see the general problems page.

Q. I can't get sound in CM97/98. Why ?

A. There is no sound in CM 97/98.

Q. Why can't I get sound to work in CM2 95/96 or 96/97 editions?

A. First you must tell the game about your soundcard using SETSOUND, this should run automaticly after installation. Then you must actually turn the sound ON in the game by clicking on the 'SOUND EFFECTS ON' panel.

Q. The game loads up but why can't I use the mouse on the options screen?

A. You MUST have a DOS mouse driver installed for the game to operate.

Q. When I move the mouse (often the center of the screen) the mouse pointer disappears/the game crashes, why?

A. You have either a Mitsumi mouse driver version 6.00, or Microsoft 7.04. The game is incompatible with these drivers. Please contact your hardware supplier for a more compatible mouse driver.

Q. When I try to start a game the computer reports `NO VESA DRIVER FOUND', why?

A. Either you have no VESA driver installed or you are running the game on a laptop machine with chips & technologies video chip. The game is incompatible with this chip. The VESA driver problem can usually be solved with Scitech DISPLAY DOCTOR. this program is obtainable from http://www.scitechsoft.com

Q. The checks the CD, checks Memory, mentions sound the drops back to DOS', why?

A. The same problem as the above.

Q. When I try to run the game I get the message `cannot find *LASERLOCK* CDROM in any drive, why?

A. There are 4 reasons for this.

· The CD is faulty

· You have no CDROM driver loaded in DOS

· Wrong CD/No CD in the drive

· You are trying to run the new version from the old C:\CM2 directory. NB the 97/98 version does not require the CD in the drive when starting.

Q. Why can't I get the editor to work in 97/98?

A. Sorry we do not support the editor, see page 34 of the manual or see the EDITHELP.TXT on the game CD.

Q. I have 8MB ram but the game says I haven't got enough, why?

A. CM96/97 requires 6800k free to run (you may have to make a BOOT disk) CM97/98 is a bit more awkward, run using the CM2E8 command, if this does not work then use a boot disk.

Q. How do I fix the installation error regarding one of the stadium pics?

A. Install the game twice. DO NOT delete the 1st installation attempt after it has failed.

Q. I cannot installation the partial installation as it tells me I do not have enough space, Why?

A. You have not enough space to install (13mb for partial 65mb for major, plus 25-30mb per saved game) if you check how much space you have and you find that you have more that enough the you will need to MANUALLY install the game.

Q. I have installed CM2 96/97 but I can't choose
Ipswich from the team select screen ?

A. You need to download the Ipswich patch, which is available from the patches section.

CM3 series

The following section is for technical support and assistance with Championship Manager 3 series.

You must have these minimum system specifications for the game to function correctly. We do not provide support for configurations that do not meet the minimum requirements.

Minimum System Requirements

· Windows 95/98
· Pentium 133MHz
· 16 Meg Ram
· 4x speed CDROM
· Direct X6
· 2MB Graphics Card supporting 800x600 & 16bit graphics
· 100% Windows 95/98 compatible mouse
· 250Mb of free hard drive space for minimum installation and operation

Recommended System Requirements

· Pentium 200MHz
· 32 Meg RAM
· 100% Windows 95/98 compatible sound card

Please note: You may need to update the drivers for your system hardware for the game to function properly. Driver files are often obtainable via the web sites of their manufacturers, links are available on the menu to the right of this FAQ.

Additionally, Championship Manager 3 is not supported using compressed hard drives, or Windows emulators. Although the game might run, its performance and stability will be questionable.

We strongly recommend that you have at least 500mb free on your system at all times for the correct operation of Windows and the relevant game software.

Q. When ever I put the CM3 CD in the drive it starts the install program, is there any way of avoiding this?

A. Yes. When you place the CD in the drive, press and hold down the SHIFT key.

Q. I only have Internet access at work/school is there away of getting the patches/enhancement packs on disc?

A: Yes, we can supply them directly. Please e-mail Eidos customer services via www.eidos.co.uk/support or call the team on 0870 9000222.

Q. The game will not install, despite me having plenty of space on the destination drive, why?

A. Install Shield needs to use some temporary space on you C drive to unpack files during installation, the only solution is to free up more space on the C: drive.

It will not use this space permanently, just to run the installation process, and should automatically delete the temp files after installation.

Q. Why is the game is reporting no CD in the drive, when it is in there?

A. This is caused by the copy protection system used on the CD. Please update to the latest enhancement pack to fix this problem.

Q. The game is requesting I set the screen to 800*600 before installation, how do I do this?

A. Click Control Panel, select display, go into settings and set the screen to 800*600 (16 bit colour). Some older monitors only allow a resolution of 640 x 480 - in which case you will not be able to use CM3.

Q. Having clicked on the cm3.exe icon the game is failing to run with an 'illegal operation' error message code, why?

A. This is also caused by the copy protection system used on the CD. Please update to the latest enhancement pack to fix this problem.

Q. I downloaded the latest Enhancement pack, yet it tells me it cannot find my installation of CM3, why is this happening?

A. Please try the following...

· Back up any important save games/files from your Championship Manager 3 directories
· Remove (uninstall) CM3 and any versions of the beta/demo from your system
· Reinstall CM3
· Install the latest patch
· Try and start a new game
· If you still have a problem contact Eidos Customer Services.

Q. Having downloaded the latest enhancement pack I am still having a problem with CM3, occasionally it crashes to the desktop for no reason, why?

A. Without more information on the errors that you are receiving (the actual error message and number is very important) we cannot determine the cause of your problem.

The most common causes of errors in CM3 are:

· Corrupt Data files (either from downloaded updates or edited using 3rd party editors available on the net).

· Bad Hard Disk Sectors
· Lack of Hard Disk space (CM3 requires a minimum of 75MB of free disk space on both the Windows and cm3 partitions to operate ... the game checks disk space frequently but windows is a multi tasking O/S and can let other applications steal available disk space).
· Lack of memory (CM3 requires a minimum of 16MB for 1 league (16MB machines CANNOT run more than one league reliably ... this is noted on the games box).
· Incompatible Hardware.

Common incompatible hardware includes:

· High End AMD processors with Non 100Mhz Memory chips (this is incredibly common).
· High End AMD processors with insufficient cooling (also incredibly common and in some cases won't be apparent unless the machine is running for several hours).
· Graphics card not supported properly by DirectX

If you do still have problems running the game then please e-mail customer services with the following information:

· Processor
· Memory (MB)
· Disk space free (on both the windows and CM3 partitions) when problem occurs (you can get this by opening a DOS box and typing dir on each partition).
· Version of the game being ran
· Official or unofficial (ie. NOCD) version.
· Full error message reported (if any)
· O/S used
· Editors used (even if not on the data used in the current game)
· Using Edited data? (and if so where did you get it from)
· Leagues active (and whether foreground or background).
· Game Date upon which the problem occurred.
· Portable or desktop PC

Q. Having downloaded the latest enhancement pack I am still receiving an error message from the game

A. Please visit Eidos Customer Services at www.eidos.co.uk/support and fill out the form.

Q. Can you give me more information on creating Networking games and Internet games?

A. How to create a network game:

· Ensure that you are connected to a Local Area Network (LAN) via TCP/IP (you can check this by running the PING command from a dos prompt)
· Run CM3 (usually in C:\Program Files\Championship Manager 3)
· After it has finished loading up the Game screen should appear, click on the option ' Network Play '.
· You should then be brought to a screen containing ' Start Network Game ', ' Restore Network Game ', ' Quick Start Network Game ' and 'Join Network Game'.
· Click on the option ' Start Network Game '.
· You are then taken through many options such as ' Game Name ' and your Nationality etc all that's stuff is easy.
· Now comes the important bit, once the game has completely loaded i.e. you have chosen the team you want to manage etc you are taken to a manager status screen
· In the top left of this screen it displays the Network Game's IP Address, be sure to note this number.
· Once you have noted the Games IP number click on ' Finish ' and you are away!
· Whoever you want to play the network game with give them the IP Address of the Network Game. This enables other players to join the Game.

Consult the 'Readme.txt' and forums for further information on creating and playing a network game.

How to join a network game

· Be sure to obtain the Network Games IP Address before loading CM3.
· Run CM3 (usually in C:\Program Files\Championship Manager 3)
· Once finished loading up, the Game screen should appear, click on the option ' Network Play '.
· You should then be brought to a screen containing ' Start Network Game ', ' Restore Network Game ', ' Quick Start Network Game ' and ' Join Network Game '.
· Click on the option ' Join Network Game '
· A Screen will then appear titled ' Select Network Game '. If you are playing over a local network the game name should appear in the boxes provided below the title. Click on whatever the game name is, then on ' Next '. The rest is really simple.
· When taken to the ' Join a Network ' Screen, in the box provided directly under the ' Select a Game ' title, enter the IP address you obtained earlier from the network game host. Click ' Next '.
· CM3 then searches for the Game under that IP address. If it is found - you are taken to a loading game screen. If the game is not found - CM3 will notify you. If this happens, you have either entered the IP address incorrectly or the game does not exist.

CM 01-02

CM 01-02 Starting a network game

1- When you play your nework games, both players must have the same version of the game and the same player data files in order to prevent the game from crashing. The most logical thing to do is for you and your mates to download the latest patch for your CM game with the original database. If you're one of the many people who want the latest player and team data make sure that you and your friends download the same exact un-official CM update.

2- The first thing you'll have to do is to load up Championship Manager, and select network game. The host (try and co-ordinate who will be the host beforehand) will choose either Start New Game or New Quickstart Game. Once the game has loaded for the host the players will able to choose which leagues they wish to run, from where they want to be and who they want to manage. Now comes the most important bit of arraning a network game with friends. When the game has loaded for the host, the IP address is given in the top left hand corner. The host must note this and inform players who wish to join of this number.

3- The "Manager Status" screen will tell you who is playing, and the Server IP address which is vital in order for people to join the game. Those who are now ready to join this game, they must click on Join Network game in the Network section. If playing over a LAN, games will be shown (automatically detected) on the Game Name section. If you are playing over the internet you may need to enter the IP address. Simply enter the number, and click Next.

4- If the IP address is correct, you will be taken to the Join Game Screen. Once all the players have joined (it will be indicated who is playing in the manager status bar), you are ready to go...

CM 01-02 CPP Errors

If you are receiving error messages in your game with ".cpp" in them, this means that somehow, your data has become corrupted and you will no longer be able to play from that saved game.
If this happens, it is best to do a full uninstall of the game to prevent any further corruption. Delete the Championship Manager 01-02 folder from your hard drive after executing the Uninstall program from the disk.

To reduce the likelihood of this happening again, please ensure that you follow these instructions before you reinstall the game:

1)Run a scandisk and a defrag of your system to ensure your computer is in the best possible condition for installation.

2) Make sure any anti-virus program is disabled before installation of the
game as this can cause corrupt data.

3)If you are running windows 98/95 press CTRL+ALT+ DEL once to bring up the Close Program dialogue box. This will list all your current applications active on your system. Before you play the game, all you should have running is Explorer and Systray. Press "END TASK" for any other programs active. NOTE: each time you restart your computer these programs will reappear so you have to keep on doing this each time.

If you still need assistance, please contact the support helpdesk on the number provided.

Installer/InstallShield problems 1607/1608

If you are having any problems installing CM4, either with error messages such as "1607" or "Please install the service pack with a new version of the installer"
you will need to do the following:

You will need to update your Windows Installer version. You can find the latest version on the CD. If you have windows 98 or ME you will need to run the "instmsia" file, if XP, you will need the "instmsiw" file. Then reboot the machine and try the installation for CM4 again.

For 1607 messages please also try the following (kindly provided by Jay Walker):
Goto Run

type

MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER

click ok

(nothing will visibly happen)

then go back to run and type

MSIEXEC /REGSERVER

click ok

(again nothing visibly will happen, however windows is reregistering all components of the installer - which is what error 1607 relates to)

Try and install the game (its been proven to work on a few systems)

For 1608 issues please try running "isscript.msi" from the CM4 CD directly.

-If you recieve cab file errors or data transfer errors, you might want to try copying the contents of the CD to a folder on your hard drive (hopefully you will have enough space). Explore the CD in My Computer, then select ALL, then Copy. Then create a folder called CM4INSTALLER and paste the contents of the CD in there. Then from that CM4INSTALLER folder, run the SETUP program and this will hopefully bypass any cd-read problems you might have been having before.

These instructions are also listed on the Readme included on the CD.

Game freezes

Unfortunately, freezes without error messages are the hardest to troubleshoot because anything could be causing them.

We have found that the more common reasons for a game to freeze mid-flow are:

1) Machine Overheating- (usually AMD processor-specific) even if you are fairly confident that you have a new machine with lots of oomph, it could still struggle with CM4 as the game uses the processor and memory much more than more graphically-oriented games which virtually run the games off the grpahics card alone. Consequently, it makes your machine heat up more as all components are whirring away, not just the graphics card, so the temperature would rise more.

Please ensure that if you do experience freezing on an AMD machine, that you ensure your machine is situated in a cool environment. Tricks of the trade include removing the Computer case, downloading a motherboard-specific monitor which measures CPU, FAN and Motherboard temperature, buying intake fans to blow air over the inside of the mahine and using other various cooling systems. It is always best to consult a professional before embarking on any alterations to your system for obvious reasons- we cannot be held responsible for any damage to PC's if you do decide to do it yourself.

2) Running out of Disk Space* - best to check your hard drive free space (in my Computer, right-click on your C or D drive and go to "Properties" you'll find a space measurement here) *800MB minimum is required for the game and a save. You might want to empty your c:\Windows\TEMP folder as this sometimes becomes clogged with files which are not needed anymore. A disk cleanup facility (start->programs-> accessories->system tools) is also a good idea, uninstalling any programs/games you may not play or need anymore will also help.

3) Screensaver or other external or anti-virus program interrupting your session. Disable the screensaver in your Display settings and disable any other software running at the time also.

If you have anymore enquiries please contact our helpline operators. Thanks.

Network Play

Q1. Problems connecting to a network / Internet game under Windows XP
A1. It is quite likely that the Built in Win XP firewall is enabled and thus blocking the port CM uses. To disable it follow these instructions:
-- Go to the Setting section in the start menu
-- Click Network Connections
-- Right click on the Connection and click Properties
-- Go to the advanced tab and un-tick the ‘enable firewall'
A better option may be to open ports 6667 both TCP and UDP rather than to disable the firewall. You can add these ports by going to your Connection Properties --> under the tab 'Advanced' > click settings in the
bottom-right hand corner and Add CM twice - one for port 6667 TCP and then one for 6667 UDP. It's much safer this way because you don't run the risk of being hacked. If you still have problems, post a message in the forum with the contents of the net. out file (found in the CM directory) as well as the usual details.

Save Game Issues

Q1. Are save games compatible from older game versions to this new version? E.g. from CM 01/02 to Cm4
A1. No, they are not compatible. Save games from different versions of CM (like 00/01 etc) are not either. You can play Cm4 Demo games with the Full version though!

Q2. My save-game no longer appears in the restore list.
A2. This means that the file header has become corrupt and your game is beyond repair. Again, the most likely causes for this happening are bad sectors (run scandisk) or data updates.

Q3. My save game gives me an error when I try and load it and it wont load?
A3. This means that the save game is more than likely corrupt and your game is beyond repair. Again, the most likely causes for this happening are bad sectors (run scandisk) or data updates.

General

Q1. When I press "Continue" the game crashes back to the desktop?
A1. Your best bets are:
1. Get the latest patch for CM4.
2. Run Scandisk on the drive CM4 is installed on to check it out!
3. Update Windows from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
4. Get the latest drivers for your hardware from the manufacturer's website

Q3. The PC restarts itself when playing CM
A3. CM cannot restart the computer on its own (except in XP where it will restart by default after a critical error). As a result, the problem is usually related to overheating and restarting is the computer's way of telling you that it is getting too hot. The best fix is to get some more case fans.

Q4. My game just crashed with a "This Program has performed an Illegal Operation and will be shut down" error" What can I do?
A4. These errors happen now and again to everyone with all kinds of windows applications, which will include CM4. We have found that more often than not they happen when Windows encounters a conflict with a driver in use in your system. Click on the "Details" button for more information about the error message. If the error is an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll or module CM4.exe, it is indicative of a driver that is not functioning correctly. Generally, the driver in question will be either the one used by the video or sound card. Since hardware manufacturers update their drivers frequently, the problem is resolved by visiting the manufacturer's website, then downloading and installing the updated drivers.

If you have a name-brand system (Tiny, DAN, Dell etc), that company's website is the best source for drivers. If your system has been upgraded over time, and several of the components have been replaced, it may be necessary to visit the individual manufacturers instead to update these drivers.

Q5. "During launch the game simply crashes back to the Windows desktop with no error message."

-- OR --

"After the game launches it locks up on a black screen."
A5. A large amount of the time this is to do with issues with the style of copy protection used on the Championship Manager 4.

The first thing to you should do is to ensure that you have the CM4 CD in the drive when you are attempting to launch the game, and that your CDROM drive recognizes that it is inserted. (as seen in My Computer)

If you have certain CD-burning software installed, such as Nero Burning Rom, or other system tools like Inseektors, Daemon Tools, or others, you may need to disable any processes the software installs, such as the NeroCheck utility installed with Nero.

This problem may also occur if you are running debuggers, decompilers, or CD-ROM Drive emulators on your system, or if you are using Real Mode [DOS] drivers for your CD-ROM drive.

If you are still having the problem after taking these steps, you may need to upgrade the firmware in your CD-ROM drive. Please contact your equipment manufacturer if you need assistance with this.

If you believe that you are having trouble with your CD's SecuRom copy protection, please complete the following: http://www.ina-support.com/sony_troubleshooter/index.htm.

Q6. When I try and start CM4 I get a message that I don't have enough memory to run the game?
A6. This will occur if the system does not have the required amount of RAM in order to run the game, or has limited memory due to an excessive amount of applications running in the background. If you get this error we would suggest closing all applications and rebooting the computer, and then starting CM4, and no other applications.

2d Match Screen Small Football Problem.

Q1. I have poor eye sight/my monitor is bad and I can't see the ball on the 2D match screen, is there anything I can do?
A1. There is indeed! In your Game\Data folder there is a file called init.cfg. What you need to do first is right click this file and click properties, and uncheck the read only box so you can save your changes!

Then you want to enter "BIG_BALL" (Exactly as it is there, with the inverted commas). This makes the ball much bigger and should help you seeing it!

Full Screen/Windowed Issues

Q1. I'm getting an error when opening CM4 ""Error:0x000D: Unable to open full screen mode"

A1. This particular error relates to the screen size of your machine. CM4 requires a size of 1024x768 pixel resolution and 32-bit colour depth. If your particular graphics card or monitor cannot achieve this setting then I am afraid Cm4 will not run on the machine. The requirements for this particular game are higher than previous versions due to the enhanced 2d graphics engine built in.

To find out what settings your graphics card/monitor runs at please try the following:
Right-Click on your desktop, go to the Properties line of the menu, then click the settings tab.
On the right, should be the resolution, on the left, the colour depth. Try adjusting them to run in the required modes. If they do not keep their settings, it means either your graphics or your monitor cannot support them.
In rare cases that the resolution is running the required settings but it still results in the error message being displayed, please go to your device manager and see if any graphics or monitors are listed. If not this could mean you are running Beta drivers for your graphics card and would need to download new ones. Unfortunately if these devices are not listed, the only way to tell what card you have would be to remove the card from your machine and actually have a look at the make and manufacturer to then visit the related website for driver support.

Q2. Can I run the game in Small-Screen Mode?
A2. If your graphics card CANNOT support the required resolution (see above) then small-screen mode will NOT work.

Graphics Cards/Nvidia Graphics issues

Q1. I'm being asked for the version of the driver for my NVIDIA graphics card? How do I find it?
A1. It's a small bit complicated…

Right click anywhere on desktop > click properties > click settings > click Advanced..

In the top right of that new window it will tell you your card name "geforce 2 mx" (or whatever type of card it is) Click that name to go into that tab..

At the bottom of this window you will see a driver and version; the version will be along the lines of 6.13.10.4109

Q2. I'm running Windows XP and have a NVIDIA graphics card and I'm having problems with Windows changing the refresh rate.
A2. Windows XP has issues with changing screen resolutions for games if you use an NVIDIA graphics board.
It is a common problem with 9x games, and even games that officially support 2000/XP, that they display at a 60Hz refresh rate when in full-screen mode. This is caused by the way Windows XP interacts with software when the software asks Windows what screen resolutions and refresh rates it can use. In 9x, Windows uses your desktop refresh rate settings for each resolution. But in XP, Windows does not send those settings to software -- it expects software to choose an appropriate refresh rate on its own. Unfortunately, very few applications have their own refresh rate setting option, nor do they try to use the highest available; they just default to the first one Windows gives them, which is usually 60Hz. This problem is universal enough that I really think Windows XP should have a function to set the default refresh rates that it passes to software, but alas, it does not.

There are pieces of software that will get around this here - http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq332.shtml

On a side note, anybody not using latest NVIDIA graphics drivers should upgrade to the latest set from www.nvidia.com.

Q3. Can the resolution be changed to 800*600
A3. Unfortunately the game was not designed to run in this resolution.

Please note, your graphics card and monitor must support 1024x768 resolution. If it does not you will need to either upgrade your system or return the game to the shop for a refund.
