CM Research Team Blog #6
The season so far..... By Jamie Beard
In the first of more regular blogs from the research team at Beautiful Game Studios, Jamie Beard gives his thoughts on the season so far.
For me the season so far has proved without doubt the English Premier League is still the biggest and best league in world football. Why? First the average goal to game ratio is just over three. Secondly five teams are battling it out for the title. Thirdly, at the other end of the table, at least ten teams are battling the drop. I could go on but finally there is an average attendance of over 33,000 in the Premiership. It’s safe to say La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Budesliga are still looking over the channel with envy…
La Liga in Spain
One thing that is not debatable is that La Liga is now possessed with a wealth of talent that no other league can compete with. Before the start of the season Real Madrid snapped up Serie A’s best player in Kaka, the World and European player of the year in Ronaldo and easily French Ligue 1’s greatest talent in Karim Benzema. But the league in general, and not just Real Madrid, has an impressive list of players plying their trade there. Throw in Ibrahimovic, Alonso and up and coming centre back Chygrynsiky along with already established stars such as Messi, Xavi, Aguero, Iniesta, Villa, Henry (the list could go on) and we have the ingredients for a mouth-watering season the like we have never seen before.
Serie A in Italy
Serie A still has a lot going for it. Inter Milan still have the Special One in charge. Samuel Eto’o now plays there after joining Inter in one of the strangest transfers in history of football. Serie A also has a whole host of other La Liga discards, the Milan derby and a revitalised Juventus team. Of course there is also the pending return of arguably the most famous sportsmen on the planet (my hero and idol David Beckham in case you were wondering who I am referring to).
Bundesliga in Germany
The Bundesliga is still enjoying the fruits of a great World Cup. Clubs play in front of full stadiums week in, week out which have amounted to an average attendance this season of over 42,000. The title race last year could of been won by at least four teams. Hopefully this season will see as exciting a finish. With players like Ribery, Robben and a future superstar in Edin Dzeko playing in the Bundesliga, the league is without doubt the up-and-coming league in World football.
Ligue 1 in France
Benzema is without doubt a huge loss for Ligue 1. As Lyon was finally toppled by Bordeaux last year we might, just might, get a bit of regular competition in France. Lyon splashed some of the cash they received from Benzema’s transfer by bringing in Porto’s Lisandro Lopez. His former team-mate Lucho Gonzalez also followed him top France and is now plying his trade at Marseille. These were good signs for Ligue 1. Players being brought in who have to skill and talent to be world beaters but have yet to prove it. Couple this with players who are destined for life at the top (Gourcuff, Chamakh, Pjanic and Gomis) and French football is not looking so bad.
But I honestly believe that none of these leagues so far this season can compare to England’s Premiership.
Premiership in England
On the back of Manchester United being quite literally taken apart by Barcelona in the Champions League Final and the loss of Ronaldo (arguably the Premiership’s greatest ever player) to Real Madrid it was a good argument to say the Premier League was now in second spot behind La Liga. But after just two months of the season, I believe that England still has the best league in World football. For me Sunday 20th September proved it when Manchester United beat Manchester City 4-3 at Old Trafford. This game had everything and was up there as being one of the greatest game English football has ever seen. It had defensive errors, stunning goals and fantastic saves. It had Tevez returning to play against his former club. Ryan Giggs is back to his best. The game seemed to an unlimited amount of injury time for United to find a winner. The fact that Michael Owen’s scored the last gasp winner was a story in itself. Mark Hughes nearly outwitted his former mentor. This game on its own was incredible but given the fact it involved the holders of Premiership title playing the team who finished 10th last year just goes to show how strong and how exciting the Premiership has become. The top six being made up of Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool just proves that fact. Goals, Excitement, drama (Adebayor alone provides this), upsets and stunning goals, there is a long way to go this season but so far the Premiership has been head and shoulders above the rest of Europe on every level.

problem i have with championship manager 10
I am just wondering on your Championship Manager 2010 game, Why are there no American teams? and why are there a large amout of American players missing, for example Landon Donovan, Jeff cunningham, Nick Rimando, also players who play for American teams but arn't American are missing such as David Beckham, Jamie Smith, Juan Pablo Angel and Dave Van Den Bergh. Also how come when I search for an American team for example Real Salt Lake, it doesn't come up but when I search for Salt Lake it comes up but with no players, why? I used to like playing the game but now I don't enjoy it. could you make a patch for your 2010 version to include American teams and players
I shoot the sheriff
Braga feeble arrow men just shoot the eagle. They won 1-0 to Benfica, at Braga stadium. A more interesting league this year, with "four big", I hope.
Portuguese League
Portuguese football has been, largely, dominated by three clubs. Benfica has the better record, followed by Porto and Sporting. Only the last thirty years we saw the coming of Porto, until they have reach to dominate last fifteen years. Before, only Benfica and Sporting counted has winners. Only a few other teams succeeded to won major Portuguese league ever. In spite of this success, today, all “the three big†have huge financial deficits. Benfica is the worst, with a 300 million Euros debt. Last years, we have seeing Benfica buying a lot of expensive players, Sporting buying very few, Porto selling and buying on a large scale. Benficas strategy has been buying young foreign players at national team level (Adu, Di Maria, Meneses and many others) and, also, buying older players with worldwide reputation and drooping careers (Reyes, Aimar, Saviola and so on). Sportings youngster’s academy has produced Figo, Ronaldo, Nani, and still produces one or two players to reach first team, every year, or to expensive selling. The national strategic framework is completed with Porto getting, every year, the big money from Uefa Champions League and showing theirs players Europe wide to reach good selling the following year. Today, the first league has the surprising Braga outsider in the top. Benfica is doing as god, also drooped only two points until now and, often, reached smashing four, five and six goals victories (5-0 to Everton was one among many others). Third placed Porto sold Lisandro Lopes and Lucho Gonzalez and seems not yet recovered from that. Sporting faces a big crisis. In spite of being the fourth in the league and of a god Europe League run, the pressure to fire the coach Paulo Bento is huge. One thing that we love in Portugal is to find the scapegoat and chop a few heads. This is the worst Portuguese cultural disease, emerging from the proverbial Latin and Arabic individualism and lack of spirit team and social responsibility. Besides of this, we are very god people, with a talent to rediscover the wheel and to produce god and beautiful ideas and innovative projects. Most of the Benficas success, this year, has been linked with his new manager. After thirty years as manager, Jorge Jesus finally reached one of the Portuguese “big threeâ€. He started the year saying Benfica was going to play twice they played last year. Until now, he delivered this package of hope to Benficas fans, playing a very combative and also beautiful football. When defending, Benfica always manage a huge amount of pressure to the opponent. When attacking they have what looks like an “all to attack†despair strategy, even when they are already wining by three of four goals. They look like relentlessly frenetic Vikings smashing the opponent to ashes to prove they are still a great club. Since the sixties, with Eusebio, they don’t manage to win an international title. The “eagles club†lives from the memory of old glory and from the hope of the warrior and creative Jorge Jesus team. Everybody in Portugal acknowledge Benfica allure this year, seeming that Porto, Sporting and Braga likes are just feeble arrow men trying to stop the eagles high fly to reach old glory again.
