Will Chelsea go spending mad in January now their ban has been suspended?

06.11.09

A statement from CAS today read: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has granted the request for a stay filed by Chelsea Football Club Ltd and Mr Gaël Kakuta in relation to the decision taken by the Fifa Dispute Resolution Chamber on 27 August 2009. Yada, yada, yada, bla, bla, bla…”

If that was too boring for you to read through to the end, here’s the crux.

Chelsea’s two year transfer ban will quite probably still go ahead, but now here’s the thing.

It won’t kick in until AFTER THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW.

This is to give them a chance to appeal the ban, even though they are still largely regarded to be quite unlikely to win that appeal.

Frankly Chelsea probably won't care if they win or lose now as essentially today's judgement has given them a chance to get players in before the ban. They'll be ready for it now, and surely it will barely even effect them.

Kenyon Abramovich BuckThis is massive news for all Chelsea fans, and every young footballer in Europe.

Chelsea’s big problem with the ban was that their squad was old, but this gives them the chance to get some younger blood in now, so they can ride the ban out later without too many issues.

Chelsea's new Peter Kenyon, who apparently is called Ron Gourlay, has of course already dismissed that Chelsea will go bonkers trying to sign some world class young players. “We already have one of the strongest pools of players out there, undoubtedly the most experienced,” he said doing his best Kenyon impression. “We have the ability to be in the market if we feel we need it. At the present time, I don't think we need it.”

Honest guv!

We fully understand why he's said this (to keep prices down), but we can't help but already start wondering who are going to be the young pups Chelsea go for?

They’ll join the already hot chase for England under 21 star Adam Johnson surely? Bad news for Sunderland fans, good news for Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson.

And if you’re looking for a world class player who’s going to see your club through a couple of transfer free seasons, maybe (just maybe) the likes of Fernando Torres, Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas may be tempted? All three maybe? No, that would just be silly.

Whoever Chelsea do go for, they won’t come cheap.

But when you’re not going to be signing anyone for another three or four transfer windows, they could be seen as absolute bargains.

Are you a Chelsea fan? Who would you like to see the Blues sign in January to see you through the ban?
