Could Sol Campbell return to Arsenal or even Spurs?

02.07.09

He's had more ups and downs in North London than Amy Winehouse but on the pitch Sol Campbell was always a star in both Lilywhite and red.

And with the former England centre-back considering his options at Portsmouth, could a return to London be on the cards?

He is now out of contract at Fratton Park and so it is natural for him to look elsewhere to spend the final few years of his career.

So let's not rule out the possibility of a move back to one of his former sides. After all, Arsenal could well do with a competent and strong centre-half in their backline while his ex-Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is now in charge of things at White Hart Lane.

Sol Campbell pompeyFor him to go back there, where he has endured so much stick from Spurs' fans after moving to the Gunners, would be a massive turnaround but football, as they say, is a funny ol' game.

However, it's likely he'll look to place his skills at a mid-ranking Premier League club on-the-up and West Ham or Fulham could be a decent shout for a team to slot into.

It's clear though that his future does not lie at Portsmouth, especially with the club in the midst of major turmoil over who owns and who manages them.

Campbell said to Sky Sports News: "I'm out of contract and will listen to different offers. I want to make the right choice. There are a few options out there.

"Portsmouth have to organise themselves and there's a lot happening there. It may resolve itself, I don't know, but as a player I want to be in the right environment, for at least the next two years, the right environment to be successful."

Sol adds he is looking for stability, something he is unlikely to find on the south coast over the next couple of months.

As a player with a lot still to offer, and one of the leading lights at Pompey, he is sure to attract plenty of interest.

The likes of Hull and Stoke could well try and tempt him to shore up their defences as they bid to stay in the top flight for a second year running.

But let's not rule out a move to London just yet. It might not be the North side of town but the East or West could well beckon.

What do you think? Could Sol Campbell return to London? Where would a good club be for him? Give us your view...
